Spring is a busy time in Glenwood. With the warmer weather, everyone's looking forward to spending time in the Great Outdoors. April features two of tGlenwood's biggest local events – the Whitewater Mesa Kite Flying Picnic and the annual Dutch Oven Gathering.
This year on Saturday April 6th, 100 Kites are expected to fly at the 18th annual Whitewater Mesa Kite Flying Picnic in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the Gila National Wilderness. The event features a multitude of kites of all colors, shapes and sizes against the backdrop of the Gila.
The Tapestry of Talent Fiber Art Fashion show, a fundraiser for the SW Women's Fiber Arts Collective (SWFAC) features wearable fiber art and accessories. The fiber art fashions made by members of SWFAC showcase one-of-a-kind designs constructed especially for the event. The show will be held Saturday, April 6, 2024 at 2 pm at the historic Silco Theater located at 311 N. Bullard St. in downtown Silver City. Funds raised by the event will go to support classes, outreach to the community, and sales events.
Last year, in addition to the fabulous fashions for sale after the show, a gift basket raffle was held that was very successful. "We are grateful to the SWFAC members and community businesses that have donated this year," states Chrys Masuda of the basket committee. "We have five wonderful baskets valued from $365 to $680. Tickets are available only to those attending the fashion show with the drawing held immediately after the fashion show and attendees must be present to win."
Three performances for Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike'are scheduled for this weekend. A spokeswoman said; "Response to this delightfully funny show has been wonderful."
Event planners seek RSVP for May 25 event commemorating historic milestone
SILVER CITY, NM, March 15, 2024 – On Saturday, May 25, 2024, residents of the Town of Mogollon will host an event at the historic Mogollon Cemetery to celebrate 100 years since the Gila Wilderness was established. Located in the historic mining/ghost town of Mogollon, in Catron County, New Mexico, the cemetery is an ideal site in which to commemorate this historic milestone.
"The Mogollon Cemetery memorializes the miners, their families, and other residents of the Town of Mogollon before and after the turn of the 20th century. It contains histories told and untold, with one family plot notably illustrating the devastating effects of the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918 to 1920," said Gila National Forest Supervisor Camille Howes. "Due to its small size, limited parking, and the sensitive nature of the cemetery, we would like to gauge interest ahead of time from members of the public who would like to participate in this event."
