SILVER CITY, N.M. - The Western New Mexico University Athletic Department announced the achievements and success of its student-athletes in the classroom during the 2023-2024 academic year, with its teams averaging a 3.15 grade point average for the semester.

"We are extremely proud of the effort of our student-athletes in the classroom," said Executive Director of Athletics Scott Noble. "We continue to improve every year with higher GPAs and more student-athletes receiving the Lone Star Conference All-Academic Honors. This year we improved to 112 recipients which is up from 64 in 2018, and of those 38 had a 4.0 GPA. This also marks the first time in my tenure that 12 out of 13 sport teams finished with a GPA of 3.06 or higher for the year."

From a total of 234 fall student-athletes, 77 would make the president's list (3.75 or higher), 51 would make the dean's list (3.30 or higher), for a grand total of 128 student-athletes earning academic success in the fall semester. As for the spring there were a total of 196 student-athletes with 58 on the president's list and 54 on the dean's list, for a total of 112 student-athletes achieving academic success.

The WNMU men's golf program finished with the highest team GPA in the academic year with a combined 3.81 average. Following them was men's tennis with a 3.49 GPA, men's cross country, with a 3.36 GPA and men's track & field who earned a 3.36 GPA. The men's cumulative GPA was a 3.31. As for the women, women's tennis set the tone with a 3.77 GPA. They were followed by softball at a 3.58 GPA, women's golf with a 3.56 GPA and women's basketball earning a 3.37 GPA. Their cumulative average was a 3.42 GPA.
