SILVER CITY, NM—The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) has informed Western New Mexico University that the university has been reaccredited for the next ten years.

The accreditation decision was made following a rigorous peer review, evaluation and site visit, according to WNMU Accreditation Liaison Officer Connie Rooks.

HLC is a private, nonprofit institutional accrediting agency. HLC Accreditation validates the quality of the institution and is essential for the university to continue offering federal financial aid.

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), announced nearly $52 million in awards for 54 HRSA-funded health centers to increase access to high-quality primary care for people soon to be released from incarceration and reentering the community.

According to the HHS press office, HRSA-funded health centers provide primary care regardless of ability to pay and are a cornerstone of our country's healthcare system, especially for individuals and families who are uninsured; enrolled in Medicaid;

MANCHESTER, NH (01/14/2025)-- JARED RIVERA of Silver City (88061) has been named to Southern New Hampshire University's (SNHU) Fall 2024 President's List. The fall terms run from September to December.

Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and above for the reporting term are named to the President's List. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits over each 16-week term or paired 8-week terms grouped in fall, winter/spring, and summer.

Silver City, NM – New mother Elisa Contreras welcomed a baby girl, Amiri, at 5:36 p.m., January 1, 2025, making her Silver City's newest community member of the New Year.
A special thanks goes Cassie Health Center, GRMC's Women and Newborn Services staff, and GRMC Auxiliary who each contributed in gifting a Graco Pack n Play crib generously filled with newborn essentials to Elisa and Gerald (father of Amiri) to help ease the transition from hospital to home. Explore the vital role of women in health care throughout Grant County’s history. 

The Silver City Museum's newest exhibit captures their groundbreaking contributions as practitioners of traditional, folk, and spiritual medicine, their pivotal role in establishing health care systems, their adaptability in the face of frontier challenges, and their advocacy for access to equitable health care.

This exhibit runs through 2025. A $5 donation is suggested.

Silver City, NM – Gila Regional EMS acquired four new Stryker LIFEPAK 35 Heart Monitors and received training on their usage on Monday, January 6, 2025. As stated on www.stryker.com, "The LIFEPAK 35 monitor/defibrillator is a clinically advanced, life-saving device with proprietary tools and technology built on an intuitive platform for advanced patient care." Currently, Gila Regional EMS is the only service carrying these monitors throughout Southwest New Mexico.

EMS Director, Eloy Medina, expresses the significance of these monitors by stating, "The monitors elevate the quality of patient care our paramedics provide. Our goal is to the set the standard for paramedics." The organization is committed to further advancing its services, with plans to acquire additional monitors through applying for grant funding.

SILVER CITY, NM—When Western New Mexico University graduates Megan Custer and Itzela Darkenwald walked across the Commencement stage in December, their journeys were already part of a larger story. The two were among ten students featured on The College Tour this year, a nationally broadcast program that showcased the unique experiences of WNMU students. Now, as they embark on new chapters, their stories are a testament to the vibrant campus community that helped shape their paths to success.

Custer, who played volleyball for WNMU and earned a BAS in Kinesiology in 2022, received her BSN this fall with plans to enter the nursing field in her hometown of El Paso. Her immediate goal is to pass the NCLEX, the licensure test required of all nurses, and then she will seek work close to family and friends in Texas.
